Physiotherapy

How physiotherapy can help you.

Physiotherapy is a medical science devoted to keeping the body working at its optimal capacity.

South City Physiotherapy has a multidisciplinary team of highly-qualified professionals, with a wide range of clinical experience and professional training. All have manual therapy training in addition to particular areas of specialist expertise.

Our 4,000 square-foot air conditioned clinic has thirteen beds, seven private treatment rooms and six cubicles. It includes a full gymnasium with weight stacks, free weights, pulley systems, treadmill, stationary bicycle, gym balls and more. We use the most recent and effective therapeutic modalities: ultrasound, laser, electrotherapy, electroacupuncture, microcurrent, hot and cold therapies, muscle stimulation, and EMG biofeedback.

If you have recently experienced a work or sport injury, or if you have been living with pain or discomfort for months or even years, physiotherapy may be what you need. By helping to speed up the normal healing process, relieving pain, reducing inflammation, correcting muscle imbalances and restoring joint motion, physiotherapy can help you to start feeling better.

    Acupuncture

Acupuncture can be very useful to alleviate and manage pain. Current research in pain management provides concrete neurophysiological evidence for the use of acupuncture in a wide variety of pain syndromes.

Our approach at South City Physiotherapy involves the use of anatomical acupuncture, a more recent Western technique that is based on knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathology. We use both non-invasive and invasive techniques—low power laser and electrical stimulation, and needles—depending on your preference and our clinical assessment.

Several of our physiotherapists have specialized training in acupuncture and are accredited by the Acupuncture Foundation of Canada Institute.

    Osteopathy

South City Physiotherapy is pleased to offer our community the benefits of osteopathic treatment.  Osteopathy is the study of the human body as it functions in health and disease.  Osteopathy views the individual as a whole unit, it assesses and treats movement restrictions in your body tissues that prevent you from feeling and functioning at your best.  It focuses on the cause of pain and dysfunction rather than concentrating only on the symptoms.  Osteopathic palpation is a refined sense of touch that allows the practitioner to feel restrictions within the body.

Osteopathic treatment is a hands-on, non-invasive approach that encourages and stimulates the body to heal and repair itself by increasing circulation and realigning the body’s structures.

Benefits of Osteopathic treatment to name a few include;

  • Removes the underlying cause of pain relieving muscle and joint pain and increasing joint range of motion.
  • Relieves chronic pain;   joint stress, body tension including headaches and migraines.
  • Helps the body adjust to changes in hormonal levels, as well as structural changes experienced during pregnancy.
  • Treats trauma experienced from motor vehicle accidents and sport injuries.
  • Reduces scars and adhesions resulting from injuries or surgical procedures.

Come in for a consultation to see how Osteopathy can maintain your good health throughout all stages of life.

    Fitness and Assesment Programs

We want you to reach your fitness goal whatever your current fitness level, while learning how to stay injury-free.

Our program is unique because we provide physiotherapy screening to assess your joint stability, postural alignment and possible muscle imbalances. So as well as designing a program to guide you through increasing levels of difficulty, we will advise you about potential problem areas to correct or strengthen as you progress.

Our fitness and assessment programs also incorporate a complete fitness assessment by one of our certified kinesiologists, following the Canadian Physical Activity, Fitness & Lifestyle Appraisal. This includes a screening of your current lifestyle, assessment of body composition, and specific tests to determine your current aerobic fitness, muscular strength, endurance and flexibility.

    Treatment for Positional Vertigo

Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) is a very common cause of dizziness.
It is often brought on by trauma to the head or damage to the vestibular system caused by an infection.
Crystals in the inner ear can become disengaged and then find their way into the posterior semi-circular canal.
This will interfere with the normal function and cause dizziness, vertigo or even nausea. These symptoms are often precipitated by a change of position of the head with respect to gravity. For example, turning in bed or looking up to the ceiling can trigger dizziness.
The most effective treatment for BPPV is a procedure called the Epley Manoeuvre or repositioning procedure.
The procedure takes about 15 minutes and is effective in two to three treatments 80% of the time when done by a trained health professional.
At South City Physiotherapy, some of our physiotherapists are trained in the treatment of BPPV.

    TMJ

The Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) is one of the most complex joints in the body, and can be affected by a range of problems. Patients with a TMJ disorder often suffer from recurring headaches or chronic pain.
Our TMJ program is conducted by a registered physiotherapist with post-graduate training in TMJ dysfunctions. Our program follows the Rocabado Techniques, and focuses on functional restoration of the biomechanics of the head, neck and craniomandibular system.

We begin with a thorough assessment of the patient's posture, biomechanics of the TMJ, and craniovertebral junction, followed by an evaluation of parafunctional habits (grinding, clenching, etc.) and breathing and swallowing patterns. Treatment can consist of posture correction, cervical mobilizations and correction of muscle imbalances.

   Functional Abilities Evaluations

The Functional Abilities Evaluation (FAE or FCE) is an objective assessment of a person's ability to perform a physical task. In general terms, this type of assessment can be useful following an injury or illness to determine a person’s ability to perform tasks associated with employment or with daily living.
In particular, the FAE determines if a person can physically perform his or her job, establishes his or her functional strength deficit, indicates the level of effort while doing physical work, and makes recommendations for an appropriate course of rehabilitation if required.

Our system gathers information using three models: a soft-tissue model through a musculoskeletal evaluation; a functional model through a functional abilities evaluation; and a secondary gain model through comprehensive validity criteria embedded in the assessments.

   Industrial Programs

Our Industrial Cost Control Program is designed to help companies reduce job-related injuries and help get injured employees back to work as soon as possible in a cost-effective manner.
South City’s program can be designed to fit the goals of individual companies through
• on-site employee injury prevention and education programs
• on-site workplace assessments of both ergonomic and physical demands
• on-site functional abilities testing
• on-site physiotherapy
• work conditioning, exercise and education programs.

South City Physiotherapy operates a satellite clinic at McNeil Consumer Products in Guelph.

  Urinary Incontinence

Treatment of female urinary incontinence is an area of physiotherapy that has been practiced in Europe for many years, and is becoming more widely available in Canada.

Physiotherapy is a non-invasive, effective treatment to help women gain awareness and strength in their pelvic floor musculature, just as they would re-educate any other muscle group in the body.

Two of South City's physiotherapists are part of a small number of physiotherapists in Ontario trained to treat urinary incontinence. Treatment includes careful instruction in the performance of Kegel exercises, which can be very effective if learned and performed properly. In addition to improving continence, pre- and post-surgical strengthening of the pelvic floor improves the outcome of urogenital surgery.

  Massage Therapy

Massage therapy can be used to treat acute or chronic stages of conditions such as soft tissue sprains and strains, sports injuries, repetitive strain injuries, post-surgical rehabilitation, or headaches and migraines.
In addition, massage therapy can help to decrease stress and control pain, and can be used to relieve discomfort associated with muscular overuse and many chronic pain syndromes.

South City’s registered massage therapist (RMT) employs a variety of techniques to enhance your health and well-being, including Swedish massage, aromatherapy, therapeutic touch and cranio-sacral therapy.
